FIREFIGHTERS rose to the challenge and completed a charity ladder climb in Stockport, reaching astonishing heights equivalent to Mount Everest.

Totalling a whopping 8,848 metres, the Ladder Climb Challenge took place in Merseyway, where 20 firefighters continuously climbed a 13.5 metre ladder in just short of seven hours.

Organised by Stockport's White Watch, aim was to raise as many funds as possible for their dedicated charities, When You Wish Upon a Star and The Firefighters Charity.

As a result of each climber's dedication, the firefighters managed to raise more than £900 throughout the day.

Victorian Nichol, centre manager at Merseyway, said: "We're thrilled to hear the climb was a great success and we'd like to thank all the shoppers who donated."

Kevan Downey, firefighter at Stockport station, added: "We'd like to thank Merseyway Shopping Centre for their fantastic efforts into making our event as successful as it was.

"The main aim was to raise as much money as possible and we'd like to thank all our firefighters and volunteers for their hard work.

"We'd also like to say a special thanks to the people of Stockport for their fantastic generosity in getting us to our grand total."
