The independent regulator of all health and social care services in England, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), has rated Cygnet Health Care’s Woodrow House service in Stockport as ‘Outstanding’.

In the first inspection of the service since it opened in January 2019, Woodrow House – which is a community specialist residential home providing care for adults with learning disabilities and autism – was praised by the CQC for working in a highly person-centred way.

In particular, Cygnet staff were commended for finding ‘innovative and individual approaches’ to meet with service users’ needs and preferences.

The CQC also observed that there was ‘an excellent understanding’ of seeing each person as an individual with their own beliefs and values, and that staff demonstrated ‘passion and commitment to helping people achieve their goals and realise their aspirations’.

The regulator also noted that transitions into Woodrow House were ‘meticulously planned’ and progressed at an appropriate pace to suit each person. The Commission went on to highlight that service users received ‘highly detailed and individualised communication plans’ to support their decision making, and that ‘staff engaged with people effectively’ when encouraging activity participation.

Staff training and development was also praised by the CQC’s report, which noted the outstanding support staff received from the management team both at a ‘professional and personal level’.

Ryan Hartnett, Residential Home Manager at Woodrow House said:All of the team at Woodrow House are delighted with the outcome of the CQC report. The report recognises the dedication to providing individualised care that enables each person to have maximum choice and control over their lives. It also reflects the passion and commitment to helping people achieve their goals and realise their aspirations through outstanding personalised support.”

Dr Tony Romero, CEO of Cygnet Health Care said: “This ‘Outstanding’ rating by the CQC is reflective of the Woodrow House team’s exceedingly positive culture and commitment to both providing high quality care and being an active part of the local community.

“It is also fantastic to see the CQC report acknowledge the exceptional leadership at Woodrow House. We are very proud to have such a dedicated staff team committed to the vision and values of the service, where people are at the heart of all we do. Receiving this ‘Outstanding’ rating at a first inspection is a really impressive achievement.”
