Stockport Council is hosting its first Inequalities Summit on Friday 10th December. The event is FREE to attend and will be held virtually.

Tackling inequality is at the forefront of the agenda in Stockport. It is the 8th most polarised borough in England. Life expectancy can be as much as 11 years different for those living in the most deprived areas of the borough compared to those living in the most affluent areas. Building a fair and inclusive borough is also a key priority under the One Stockport Borough Plan, published earlier this year.

The Summit hopes to bring together local residents, businesses, communities and organisations to share their lived experiences of living and working in Stockport, explore how together we can tackle deep seated inequalities in areas such as health and economic activity and ultimately encourage everyone involved in joining Stockport Council in pledging tangible action to tackle inequality.

Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Director of the University College London Institute of Health Equity and author of Build Back Fairer: The COVID-19 Marmot Review, will open the event. Keynote speakers include Professor Arpana Verma, Clinical Professor of Public Health and Epidemiology at the University of Manchester, and Nicola Wallace-Dean, Founder and Community Organiser at Starting Point Community Learning Partnership.

The day will be split into four sessions:

Sessions 1: A Fair and Inclusive Stockport - expert and local insights and perspectives on the inequalities challenge

Session 2: Early Years and Education or Communities and Place

Session 3: Healthcare or Employment and Income

Session 4: Fair and Inclusive framework and pledges for action - creating a movement for change in which we all play a role and sharing commitments to action for a fair and inclusive Stockport

Sessions will run from 10am - 4pm, with guests welcome to stay for all or part of the day. Tickets are free but should be registered for via Eventbrite.

Councillor Amanda Peers, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Neighbourhoods, commented: "This should be a fantastic event to bring together a cross-section of our community to unite us all in the fight against all kinds of inequality. In the One Stockport Borough Plan, one of our key priority areas was to create a fair and inclusive borough, one where everyone has equality of opportunity and receives the support they need to succeed in their chosen field. We want to discuss the council's specific plan that looks to address the inequality issues we know exist in Stockport, but also look wider, at what we can all do on an individual or organisational level to tackle inequality."
