Plans for a new multi-million-pound emergency and urgent care campus at a Stockport hospital have been approved.
The new £30m campus at Stepping Hill Hospital will significantly improve emergency and urgent care services for tens of thousands of local people.
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust is investing in a major new facility to transform the hospital's A&E unit and provide a more efficient healthcare facility where patients, families and carers will receive the highest quality care and support.
Work on the extension, which will increase the size of the current clinical area by more than 300 sq. m., is due to start on site this year and will see new assessment, treatment and consultation areas come on stream for key emergency and care services. This will include a new children's emergency department along with enhanced mental health and medical same-day emergency care provision.
The main campus frontage will also be extended to accommodate an enlarged ambulance and patient reception area while new hard landscaping, tree planting and outdoor seating will be carried out to provide exterior improvements.
Imogen Zulver, senior planner at the Manchester office of Lichfields, who secured planning permission on behalf of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, said the project will provide much needed community healthcare facilities.
She said: "We have worked closely with the Trust and the local council to deliver this project. The new campus opens a fresh chapter for quality healthcare provision in the South Manchester area, which has been designed to centre around patients' needs and provide a state-of-the-art facility that will benefit the community for decades to come."
Karen James OBE, chief executive at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, has said previously: "These new facilities will help us to provide the safe, good quality care which these patients need."
