Stockport residents did a good deed and got fit at the same time as part of the launch of new fitness offering, GoodGym.

Over 40 people took part by running from Life Leisure Grand Central in Stockport town centre to the Heatons Centre to help our friends from Signpost Stockport for Cares manage their green space with some painting and cutting back - so that all their visitors will be able to enjoy a breath of fresh air in a relaxing space.

Stockport Council's Cabinet Member for Health and Chair of Stockport's Health and Wellbeing Board, Councillor Tom McGee, said: "It was great to see such a positive start to GoodGym in Stockport with many people taking part and wanting to help others in their community. I'm looking forward to this continuing and for people to come together with GoodGym to make a difference to local people's lives."

And Jennie Neil, who took part in the launch event, said: "It's great to have GoodGym in Stockport - this is a fantastic way of getting some exercise and working on community projects together whilst making a difference to your own health and to our community in Stockport."

GoodGym is a community of runners who combine exercise with helping local communities and is a unique approach to help to build community cohesion, promote fitness and reduce social isolation. GoodGym runners stop off on their isolated older people with one-off tasks they can't do on their own.

GoodGym welcomes runners of all ability and is open to anyone over 18 in Stockport. There is a weekly group run taking place every Tuesday at 6:30pm from Life Leisure Grand Central and two hours free parking is available for runners in the Stockport Exchange NCP car park.

The launch of GoodGym Stockport has been made possible through the support of Stockport Council and Age UK Stockport and will be GoodGym's 46th area nationwide and the first in Greater Manchester.
