STOCKPORT ATHLETICS TRIUMPH

At Heaton Park, the Greater Manchester Schools Cross Country Championships took place with an amazing haul of medals for individual and team wins across the age groups for Stockport School’s runners.

In the U13 Boy’s race, Jay Hutchinson took first place over the 2km course with teammates James Telfer (8th), Felix Benson (14th) and Ben Sturgess (20th) helping to take Gold in the team medals. In the U13 Girl’s race, Ella Buckley took Bronze with support from Ellena Walker (5th), Niamh Mackintosh (6th) and Aisling Brooks (7th) to bag another Gold in the team prizes.

In the U15 Girl’s, Freya Murdoch had some tough competition from Trafford runner Sara Clough but managed to bag a 4 second lead to take Gold. Another well-deserved team medal also went to Freya, Sophie Ellwood (4th), Jasmine Reed (5th) and Saffron Meade (11th).

Yet more team win were to be had by the U15 Boy’s team, made up of Luke Carrington (3rd), Tom Clarke (4th), Paddy Doohan (6th) and Connor Lawler-Smith (29th) and the U17 Boy’s team; Archi Dyer (5th), Finley Mayoh (8th), Tobin Rose (10th) and Charlie Tittensor (11th).

More medals were won in the U17 Girls race which saw a fabulous run by Katie Stringer, taking Gold with a 19 second lead over Bolton’s Lucy Dixon. The team were also awarded Silver with great results from Akira Edgson (8th), Esther Hulley (18th) and Isabelle Stutchfield (22nd).

The U20 races saw quite a small turn out but Lucas Parker came away with a Gold medal and the team win with teammates Sam Soles (4th), Stuart Diamond (11th) and Sam Heyworth (14th). The U20 Girls didn’t manage to field a full Stockport team but Alice Davies took 6th place overall and Lauren Burgess was 13th.

Most of these athletes will now go on to compete for Greater Manchester in the English Schools Championship race on 14 March 2020.
