Stockport Libraries are inviting children in Stockport to sign up to the free and exciting Silly Squad Summer Reading Challenge. This year it’s all online and Stockport Libraries have provided a FREE range of e-books and e-audiobooks. If your children are not members of the library, we’ve made it quick and easy to join online and start borrowing straight away. And there are many copies of these titles, so children won't have to wait to borrow any!

The theme for the Summer Reading Challenge 2020 is ‘Silly Squad’. Children who join the challenge will meet a loveable bunch of animals who run a fantastic fun house and will unlock fun online badges, games and videos as rewards for their reading. Usually we ask children to read 6 books, but this year they can set their own challenge to read any number of books and are encouraged to read anything that makes them happy, get silly and have fun!

Jacqueline Wilson, Summer Reading Challenge Ambassador says: “I feel the Summer Reading Challenge is extra important this year! How sensible to have a Silly theme. We've all had to deal with serious and scary issues, so it's time for a bit of fun. There are so many comical and crazy children's books to cheer us all up. Let's get reading and get happy!”

Councillor Kate Butler, Cabinet Member for Citizen Focus and Engagement who has responsibility for Libraries said: “We know how important it is for children to keep reading over the summer holidays so that they keep their literacy levels up. This year there’s a better reason than ever as we know that reading for pleasure helps children to feel relaxed.

“We know from previous years that thousands of children across Stockport sign up and have lots of fun taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge. This summer we hope to introduce more children to online reading, so they can take part in the challenge and make use of all the free books available from their local Stockport library throughout the summer and beyond."
