STOCKPORT'S Mayor and Mayoress officially opened The Light Cinema's new 4,360 sq. ft extension with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a celebratory private screening.

Laura Booth and Lynn Glover joined film distributors, local businesses and radio competition winners to celebrate the Bridgefield Street cinema's revamp.

It includes the addition of two new screens, a new menu, bars and outdoor seating area.

After being given the red carpet treatment, attendees enjoyed drinks, nibbles and a private preview of Bruce Springsteen-inspired movie Blinded By The Light, featuring a specially-filmed introduction by director Gurinder Chadha.

In addition to the screens and seating areas, the cinema unveiled a private event space and bar for parties and corporate hire.

Its refreshed food offering features freshly-baked pizza, sliders, sharing plates and salads as well as a new DIY dessert counter serving bubble waffles and ice cream.

The cinema has renovated its ground floor foyer including a larger, refreshed bar space alongside a stylish garden bar for drinks and casual dining.

A "hole in the wall" bar and lounge seating area has also opened on the first floor.

The two screens, Screen 11 and 12, feature 45 and 82 seats respectively - adding a combined total of 127 seats to the cinema's current 914-seat offering.

Following the popularity of the cinema's reclining seats, the two new screens have also been fitted with the same design.

The event space, which can seat up to 60 people, will be accessible via Screen 12 and feature a large-format display screen easily hooked up to a PC or tablet.

Since opening in 2017, The Light Stockport has served more than 700,000 guests and sold more than 100,000 boxes of popcorn.

Light Cinemas operates in nine other locations in the North West and across the UK. Chief executive Keith Pullinger said: "It's a great feeling to be extending and upgrading this cinema so soon after its opening in 2017.

"The cinema was poplar from day one but has grown from there to be our most successful site.

"Our aim is to offer cinemas that are genuinely exciting venues to visit including a wide range of films and events, good food and drink offers and great service - this extension is the next part of that journey."

Tom Dean, business manager at The Light Stockport, added: "It's a very exciting time for us at The Light Cinema, Stockport. The addition of two extra screens on the ground floor level will help with accessibility, capacity and help increase our customer experience."
