At around 11.45pm on Friday 27 October 2017, two neighbourhood police officers were patrolling in the Hulme area of Manchester when they observed suspicious activity involving a Mercedes C-Class on Dearden Street and Royce Road.

A short time later, officers stopped the car on Range Road, Whalley Range. The driver – Numan Ahmed (23/02/83) of Outwood Road, Heald Green was searched under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act and found to be in possession of a large quantity of cash.

Further searches on the vehicle resulted in the seizure of Class A and Class B drugs with an estimated street value in excess of £3000. A number of mobile phones and a second large quantity of cash were also seized from the Mercedes.

Ahmed was arrested and taken in to police custody for questioning. He was subsequently charged with possession with intent to supply Class A and Class B drugs.

Ahmed pleaded not guilty to four counts of possession with intent to supply but, following a seven day trial, a jury convicted him.

Today (Thursday 20 February 2020), he was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to five years imprisonment.

PC David Stapley, of GMP’s City of Manchester division, said: “Today’s result just goes to show that Greater Manchester Police is committed to safeguarding communities from drugs and that neighbourhood officers are key when it comes to identifying and arresting those responsible for supplying illegal substances.

“I hope this sentencing serves as a stark warning to those involved or considering getting involved in this type of crime, which so often blights communities, that officers are observing, will pursue you and ultimately bring you to face justice.”
